Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 2, 1877

Overview

Bad weather kept the departure from happening, so the day was spent amid the Caxton commemorations at Westminster Abbey and a dinner with Schlesinger afterward. The Abbey left a strange impression on the diarist, who felt the music and memorials were oddly mismatched to the setting.

Content

Saturday, June 2:

Departure impossible on account of the storm; attended the Caxton celebrations in Westminster Abbey; very curious impression; Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang as much out of place there as all the monuments.

In the evening dinner with Herr Schlesinger, whose handsome womenfolk, wife and sister-in-law, are full of London society.
