Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 29, 1877

Overview

After a productive rehearsal and another sitting for Burne-Jones, I enjoyed a pleasant walk through the parks in fine weather. The evening concert was badly marred by Unger’s complete failure to sing, leaving Materna and Richter to carry the scene as best they could.

Tuesday, May 29:

Rehearsal from 10 to 1. Herr Unger sings the Forging Songs and Brünnhilde’s Awakening very well. After the rehearsal a sitting for Burne-Jones, then a nice walk in fine weather through Holland Park and Kensington Gardens.

In the evening the concert. Herr Unger produces not a single note, does not ask to be excused, but stands there utterly unperturbed, with poor Materna exerting herself in the awakening scene, Richter cursing, R. sending him looks to turn him to stone, not making the slightest effort. R. tells him afterward that he was not hoarse, but had lain down tired after eating too much and had clogged his palate. This tops everything. The audience very good-natured.
