Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 13, 1877

Overview

A visit to a High Church service leaves the writer unimpressed, and the contrast with Catholic efforts in England prompts reflections about Germany and America. The day continues with social calls and a German dinner, where Siemens leaves a stronger impression than Schliemann, while R. remains in good spirits.

Content

Sunday, May 13:

I go to the High Church to hear a famous preacher (Rowssell); I do not understand much, and the preceding service is soul-destroying, much worse than ours. I can see why the Roman Catholics are making so much propaganda here, as I have been told.

While I am there, R. writes to Herr Feustel, asking him to start a subscription to help clear up the deficit. Thoughts of America - never again back to Germany.

In the afternoon I have some calls to pay; in the evening a German dinner at Herr v. Ernst's. Dr. Schliemann, the archaeologist, is a guest, not very impressive; on the other hand, Dr. Siemens is very impressive, to all appearances. R. is very cheerful and friendly.
