Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 5, 1877

Overview

Despite the cold, the writer spends the day in the National Gallery and comes away with a renewed appreciation for major painters, especially the Italian works. Later rehearsals continue, but the evening guests leave R. irritated rather than comforted.

Content

Saturday, May 5:

Fine day in spite of great cold; I visit the National Gallery, make the acquaintance of Reynolds with great pleasure, gain a fairer impression of Hogarth, and receive light and warmth again from the Italians.

In the afternoon rehearsal at home with the singers; in the evening we have some guests, all of whom were in Bayreuth at the performances. R. annoyed at the visitors.
