Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 22, 1877

Overview

A conversation about refinement and personal appearance turned into a pointed reflection on human taste and social disgust. The rest of the day was dominated by R.’s work and the exhausting stream of letters and telegrams tied to the London concerts, leaving little room for shared reading.

Thursday, March 22:

“For such as you a longing for nobility is the source of much disgust,” R. said to me today when I told him how many men must seem unbearable to women, simply on account of their lack of cleanliness.

He works in the morning, while in the evening there are regularly problems to be dealt with concerning the London concerts; no chance now of reading together, letters and countless telegrams! Munich as always cowardly and perfidious.
