Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 19, 1877

Overview

Despite the pressure of London preparations, R. still managed to keep working on Parsifal, though the rest of the day was consumed by calculations and practical burdens. The entry also notes a legal dispute with a photographer, a discussion of Plutarch, and the growing success of Die Walkiire in Vienna, which she views with some irony and admiration.

Content

Monday, March 19:

In spite of London and everything else, R. still finds the will-power to continue writing Parsifal in the morning. The afternoon does indeed pass in a fever of reckoning, as he says, since his thoughts and deeds are now fixed on London. Legal proceedings with a photographer here, and Antigone.

After lunch R. showed me the remarkable passage in Plutarch in which Cassius expatiates to Brutus about visions. In Vienna the fourth performance of Die Walküre with increasing success; the Emperor saw it for the third time, which is considered very remarkable. It seems to me that a tried and tested prince might well be able to understand Wotan.
