Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 26, 1877

Overview

A relentless storm colors the whole day with gloom, and the weather seems to mirror anxieties about beauty, hope, and faith being swept away. There is also growing frustration around the public reception of the work, though the evening ends with a return to classical reading.

R. says how sad it is that he has now reached the stage of wishing to hear nothing more about the Ring des Nibelungen and wishing the theater would go up in flames. Dr. Forster writes, very willing to engage Herr Unger and at the same time asking for the Ring. R. says that if the King intends to have the Ring performed, as is reported in the newspapers, then he will release his work to the other stages as well.

In the evening, Aristophanes’s The Peace, always as a complement to Thucydides.
