Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 27, 1877

Overview

The narrator looks into arranging a lottery for the weavers and gains a sobering glimpse of how little compassion people show. Domestic work with the children fills the day, while Richard thinks through names for Parsifal and the evening ends with unease at the savagery described in Thucydides.

Content

Saturday, January 27:

Occupied in inquiring whether a lottery might not be organized for the poor weavers, thereby gaining a peculiar insight into human apathy. Regular work with the children; R. talks about the names in Parsifal; what to call his old man? Gurnemanz is not right; Arabic, something Gothic must be found.

In the evening read a little Thucydides, dismayed at the cruelty of these beautiful wild animals.
