Wednesday, January 24:

R. is somewhat better, all he needs is rest. Very moved by the account of Beethoven’s death, he relates it to me. We enjoy a good, quiet day of forgetfulness; I purposely divert the conversation from all subjects which oppress us, and the children contribute in their own way toward producing a cheerful mood, and thus we succeed in giving R. a good night, from which he awakes in good spirits.
