Saturday, January 20:
R. had a tolerable night, with a pleasant dream about his old parrot, which came flying back to him, calling, “Richard, Richard!”, and singing him melodies from his works.
As I am going to the children's room, I find on my table a letter from Herr Levi, the conductor: he is here, feeling after a “very successful” performance; we are astonished. Friend Feustel, now a Reichstag deputy, informs us on his return from Munich that Councilor Düfflipp wishes to come here tomorrow, and that the opinion in Munich is very favorable!
Continue our reading in the evening. Yesterday R. dictated an extract from his biography, so as to give Herr Tappert something with which to reply to the attacks. R. told me nothing about this until he had already sent it off, I believe because he knows how indifferent I am toward all the chatter, and that indifference lies closest to preserving silence.
