Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 11, 1877

Overview

R. is finishing Sismondi and becoming even more absorbed in his studies, while the writer regrets being unable to share that intellectual routine because domestic duties leave no time. She listens closely to his conversation instead, valuing the chance to keep up with his thoughts indirectly.

Thursday, January 11:

R. is now reaching the end of Sismondi, increasingly content with his reading, to which, as with everything else, he devotes tremendous liveliness and personal productivity.

I have with some regret to tell him that I am unfortunately no longer able to join him in such studies, since house and children do not permit it. I try to learn from his conversation as much as I can, and appreciate being able to follow him, if only in this way.
