Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 29, 1876

Overview

A solitary visit to the Vatican museum with the children brought real delight, even while my thoughts remained clouded. Feustel’s letter strengthened my conviction that we ought to accept poverty and silence rather than compromise, and though R. felt it less intensely, he still wrote to Feustel in that spirit.

Content

Wednesday, November 29:

Visited the Vatican Museum alone with the children. Great delight in it, even though my mind is clouded by thoughts.

Yesterday evening I read Herr Feustel’s letter to R., which makes me think that the only course worthy of us would be to pay the deficit out of our own resources and then live in poverty, preserving silence toward all and everything.

R., who did not read the letter until this afternoon, does not feel the necessity as strongly as I do, but nevertheless he writes to Herr Feustel in this sense.

I know that for me real satisfaction would begin with this new phase of our life.
