Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 26, 1876

Overview

The Capitol museum occupied the morning, though the sirocco left me exhausted by afternoon. Music at Herr von Keudell’s brought Sgambati’s quintet once more into view, and his presence made a vivid impression; the day also included visits to Palazzo Borghese, Princess Wittgenstein, and Countess Voss.

Content

Sunday, November 26:

Visit to the Capitol Museum. Very tired in the afternoon, owing to the sirocco.

In the evening, music at Herr von Keudell’s. The quintet by Sgambati interests us very much, and his whole personality makes a very excellent impression. Looking at Michelangelo’s pictures, he says, “Strange that death should become a subject for art; it turns the whole thing into a phantom.”

Palazzo Borghese with R. In the afternoon, visit to Princess Wittgenstein, long conversation about many things from the past. In the evening with Countess Voss.
