Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 31, 1876

Overview

R. read and wrote about the unfair neglect of the architect Briickwald while honors were being scattered too freely elsewhere. To celebrate Malwida’s birthday, they took the children on donkeys to the Deserto, where the landscape still pleased them and a splendid sunset rounded off the outing. The day ended with more reading and conversation over Sismondi’s comparisons of Greece and Italy.

Content

Tuesday, October 31:

R. reads, and writes to Councilor DiifHipp about a decoration for the architect Brückwald, who has been unjustly ignored, while Herr Brandt has been overwhelmed with decorations.

We celebrate Malwida’s birthday today with an outing on donkeys to the Deserto, to the jubilation of the children. The vegetation has lost a lot since our first visit, but it is still lovely, and Heaven sends us a very fine sunset as a parting gift. In the evening we read, with R., Sismondi’s comparison between Greece and Italy, then conversed.
