Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 19, 1876

Overview

The harsh ringing of church bells put her in mind of the difference between local and German sounds. R. was unwell and spent part of the day in bed, while she continued teaching the children and reading Dante and Italian political writings.

Content

Thursday, October 19:

At 5 o'clock, tolling of the canonical hour, an ugly jangle indeed; our German bells speak with a different voice! R. is not well, has to go to bed, where he remains for part of the day. I give the children their lessons, read the life of Dante, two cantos of the Purgatorio, and parts of the Républiques italiennes.
