Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 28, 1869

Overview

With no outside news, Richard drafts and discards a letter to Dufflipp while the question of action or silence persists. Cosima inks the score, works with the children, and drives with them before Richard returns distressed by seeing an animal tormented. Childish plays by Prince Georg and Beethoven quartets frame a day whose delight is shadowed by human ugliness.

Tuesday, September 28:

Nothing from outside. R. drafts a letter to Dürffl., which he then discards. Always the question, to be or not to be. I ink in the score and work with the children. In the afternoon go for a drive with them.

R. returns home upset; he has again seen an animal being tormented, which angers and distresses him. “The worst, and in some respects the ugliest, animal of all is the human being.” We dip a little into Prince Georg’s plays; very childish stuff. Beethoven quartets, indescribable delight!
