Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 21, 1869

Overview

Cosima and Richard argue over whether he should conceal painful things from her, with she insisting on knowing all. Hallwachs reports she will soon be summoned to Berlin, and Siegfried's temporary refusal of the bottle causes worry before calm returns. A day with the children, a cheerful Cornelius letter, Lenbach's note, and early rest follow the bad weather.

Content

Tuesday, September 21:

In the morning argument with R. about the one point on which our opinions still differ; he feels the urge to spare me many things by concealing them; I am firmly in favor of being told all things, good and bad.

Report from the stage director Hallwachs that I am soon to be summoned to Berlin.

Worry about Siegfried, who at first would not take his bottle, but calm soon restored. The whole day from early till late with the children; the weather is bad.

Cheerful letter from Peter Cornelius; it seems that R.’s statement has after all been of great benefit to all the weaklings. Letter to me from Lenbach.

Early to bed, to make up a little for the Siegfried nights.
