Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 24, 1876

Overview

A drive to the theater leaves a profound impression now that the scaffolding is down; the building seems at once noble and sorrowful, like a dream seen at sunset rather than a new beginning. Amid rehearsal business, visiting musicians, and work for the patrons, the joy of the coming production is shadowed by worry and by some silent burden that cannot be spoken aloud.

Content

Wednesday, May 24:

Drove with R. on one of these days up to the theater; the scaffolding has been taken down. A sublime impression from the auditorium as well as from the stage, like a dream; it makes one feel noble and melancholy! How little true sympathy has accompanied the spirit now made manifest here, how remote it seems!

The building shines down on me like a setting sun, not a dawn! Thought much, so much, about Hans!

Today, Monday, R. was pleased with Herr Unger, who came to rehearsals again after having been for a long time indisposed. Herr Schlosser is also here; his demands are high. I write the envelopes for the patrons of honor.

In the evening Herr Brassin, the violinist from Breslau. Several are already here, and one could take much pleasure in the approaching work, were one not so weighed down by worry, as well as by an experience about which we feel it is our duty to remain silent.
