Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 19, 1876

Overview

News from England said things were going badly for Hans in America, and the mood turned dark. He wrote to Loulou and tried to define her mission, hoping she would understand what he wanted from her. A later note from Sunday, May 21 adds that Frau v. Staff and her children continued to be welcome companions, but R. still faced cancellations and endless demands for free seats from unproductive people.

Friday, May 19:

Boni receives a letter from England, saying that in America things are not going well for Hans. Very gloomy feelings! Letter to Loulou. Outlined her mission to her - will she understand me?

Sunday, May 21:

Still seeing a lot of Frau v. Staff, whose children I welcome very much as companions for my own; much correspondence; for R. unfortunately much vexation, several cancellations from orchestra players and constant requests for free seats from people who have done absolutely nothing.
