Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 11, 1869

Overview

Richard drafts a letter to the conductor despite the previous decision to remain silent, and although it horrifies Cosima, she sees that silence is gnawing at him. The day becomes crowded with Marie Muchanoff, Fraulein Holmes, the Brockhaus family, and others, disrupting Tribschen's usual life. News about Hans and a tender letter from Countess Krockow touch Cosima painfully amid the social bustle.

Saturday, September 11:

Contrary to his decision of yesterday, R. produces in the morning a letter to the conductor that horrifies me; I should have preferred him not to send it, but it does him good, for bearing things in silence gnaws at his heart.

Worked with the children early in the morning, but then a gathering at Tribschen of Marie Muchanoff, Fräulein Holmes, poetess, composer, etc., and others besides. The former pains me with various things she tells me about Hans. At midday a very affectionate letter from Countess Krockow, which also affects me, since it concerns my fate.

In the afternoon the Brockhaus family, later the Holmeses, father and daughter, and thus till late in the night. Very un-Tribschen-like!
