Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 5, 1869

Overview

Cosima sends the older children to church and spends the morning with the younger ones while Richard writes letters and orchestrates. A family lunch and trip to the Alpine wildlife museum make a quiet domestic Sunday. The only outside note is a false press account claiming intrigue and Wagner's unpopularity caused Rheingold's nonperformance.

Content

Sunday, September 5:

Sent the two elder children to church, spent the morning with the two young ones. R. writes to Judith and to Schäfer and orchestrates. Family lunch, and afterward drive to the Alpine wildlife museum.

In the evening read Don Quixote. Nothing from outside; only in the A.A.Z. reports that an intrigue against Perfall is the reason for the nonperformance of Das Rheingold, and that because of all the feeling against him in Munich, R. had to leave the city!
