Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 30, 1875

Overview

A visit to Princess Hohenlohe left her unimpressed, and the day only worsened as news came in of Herr Labatt’s illness and the muddle at the theater. Gounod’s "Romeo et Juliette" stood in for "Tannhäuser," provoking disgust and making R. seriously consider leaving Vienna, a decision she supported. The whole situation felt to her like a city overrun by mediocrity and bad faith.

Tuesday, November 30:

Princess Hohenlohe has begged me to visit her today. I do so, and return home not greatly edified. I hear that Herr Labatt has reported sick - whether this is incompetence, ill will, or genuine indisposition is hard to decide. Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette is given in place of Tannhäuser; the true nausea produced by this performance, together with the impressions R. is receiving from the Lohengrin rehearsals, makes him think of leaving Vienna tomorrow. I give him my full support. What all the news amounts to is that nothing but rabble has been in evidence here.
