Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 9, 1875

Overview

R. is unsettled by a dream of a sudden, painful separation, then calms himself by deciding the journey was not really needed, even as his letter to Levi leaves me uneasy. We spend the day in a bright autumn mood, amused by the odd assortment at the flax-spinning mill, and Mimi’s steadfastness gives me a little hope.

Content

Saturday, October 9:

R. dreamed of a departure, a quick parting from me; the train could no longer wait, I could not accompany him on account of the children. He weeps over this hasty parting, runs to the bridge, which is only open to cabs, and tries to summon a cab, but from all of them 'fat fellows' look out. In despair he tells himself that the journey is not at all necessary, and wakes up.

He writes to Herr Levi, telling him his undertaking is assured, which rather alarms me.

Lovely autumn day, much gold outside, but still much green! Drive to the flax-spinning mill, a visit which much amuses us owing to the utter incompatibility of all gathered together there.

In the evening, the Annals. The excellent Mimi, who is always the same, gives us grounds for hope.
