Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 7, 1875

Overview

Another bad night leaves R. strained, and a letter from nephew Clemens reports that Ottilie feels offended. She takes care of birthday purchases for Lusch, then the two of them walk to the Eremitage before ending the day with the Annals. The autumn trees lift her spirits after a period of melancholy, while she also delights in Fidi's devout evening prayer and in R.'s renewed attention to a dog remedy found in Orbis Pictus.

Content

Thursday, October 7:

Unfortunately R. again had a very bad night. Letter from our nephew Clemens, saying that sister Ottilie is offended. Purchases for Lusch's birthday; in the afternoon a walk to the Eremitage. In the evening the Annals.

The green-and-golden tree of autumn gives us joy, yesterday I was lost in deep meditation, great melancholy seized hold of me. Pleasure in Fidi, who speaks his evening prayer so devoutly; R. says he himself continued saying his evening prayers for many years: 'One really always ought to say them, to submerge oneself, so to speak, every evening in the primal source.' He has found a prescription for our dogs in the Orbis Pictus and is treating them accordingly.
