Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 4, 1875

Overview

R. reads Parsifal to her while she is still in bed and repeats his grim belief that the morning is the only usable part of the day. That caution is justified when Feustel writes that the treasury terms make the promised aid almost worthless, prompting R. to consider appealing directly to the Emperor after first sounding out Mimi. The evening turns gentler with Goethe's Annals, which she finds admirable in every respect.

Content

Monday, October 4:

Recently R. read Parsifal to me while I was still lying in bed; he said we must make good use of the morning, since the day would bring nothing but disaster. And indeed he receives today a letter from friend Feustel, telling him that the treasury stipulations make the aid provided downright illusory; in consequence of this, R. decides to approach the Emperor, but first I am to inquire of Mimi.

In the evening Goethe's Annals; an enviable person in every way.
