Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 27, 1875

Overview

On the feast of Cosmas and Damian, an anonymous Berlin letter brings troubling news: Kinowsky is said to be in distress while Kathchen Konig is doing well, a reversal that feels unjust. She writes to nephew Jachmann on the man's behalf, while R. begrudgingly receives the difficult court photographer Joseph Albert for business reasons, and the evening closes with conversation and a recollection from Leipzig of youthful mischief.

Monday, September 27:

Cosima's and Damianus! Anonymous letter from Berlin, telling us of Kinowsky's misery, whereas [Kathchen] Konig is said to be doing well. So the better one receives the punishment. I write to our nephew Jachmann asking him to assist this man.

R. is obliged to receive the Court photographer, Herr [Joseph] Albert, who in former times in Munich behaved abominably, and now has the audacity to visit him here. R. receives him because it concerns a commission, captions for pictures, which he wants entrusted to Herr Tappert. Herr Albert says that 35,000 copies of a Wagner album have been sold to a firm in Berlin. Yet these people buy neither Der Ring des Nibelungen nor the collected writings.

A memory: R. recalls from his second year in Leipzig how he knocked the heads off the flowers in the neighboring garden and spat all over the place into spittoons painted yellow. Conversed in the evening.
