Diary Entry of September 24, 1875

Overview

The night before had been poor, but Scharff finished the medallion and Wagner’s afternoon trial of Unger lifted everyone’s spirits. Unger’s Siegfried sounded promising enough to inspire real hope, and that confidence seemed to restore the household’s mood and even improved the night that followed.

Unfortunately R. had a very bad night.... The medal maker Scharff finishes the medallion, it seems better technically, but the expression on the old one pleased me more.

R. in the afternoon to try out Herr Unger, returns with the firm conviction that he will be able to sing Siegfried—hardly dare trust my unconditional faith in R.’s judgment—so great a happiness would this be! Happy atmosphere in consequence, a good night!
