Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 9, 1875

Overview

The night leaves her haunted by R.’s tender whispered words, and by morning a deep melancholy has settled over her, so that every image or impression turns her thoughts back to her one beloved. On top of that, a letter from the headmistress brings worry that the children need orthopedic treatment, while R. takes a solitary walk in the fine autumn weather.

Content

Thursday, September 9:

In the night I heard R.’s voice whispering softly, “My dearest wife, all that I have, the only being who understood me and took pity on me.”

Much melancholy is piling up inside me; no hour passes, no lovely image, no great impression arises without my thinking of my only one. “Oh, now we were Night’s vassals!”

Letter from the headmistress, saying the children should be sent for orthopedic treatment. Great concern! I wrote some letters, first of all to the headmistress.

R. goes for a walk by himself. Fine autumnal weather.
