Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 7, 1875

Overview

R. refuses to keep working on his biography, claiming that his time is too strained, and the issue is quickly sharpened by a telegram from Herr Fiirstner demanding his rights. After lunch with Herr Unger, Hey, Seidl, and Zumpe and a drive to the Eremitage with the children, the evening lightens with the first canto of Guiot’s Bible, which makes them laugh at discovering the Flavignys among the righteous.

R. cannot be persuaded to continue his biography; he says he has too little leisure time now. Hardly have we discussed this when a telegram arrives from Herr Fürstner, insisting on his “rights.” R. intends to let the matter go to court.

Herr Unger, Hey, Seidl, and Zumpe for lunch. We are told that Unger is overcoming his difficulties; afterward, a drive to the Eremitage with the children.

In the evening we read the first canto of Guiot’s Bible; we laugh to find my maternal ancestors, the Flavignys, listed among the good people.
