Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 14, 1875

Overview

The trip home begins under gray skies but ends in bright weather, with a solitary walk in Berneck bringing more pleasure than Alexandersbad. The mood sours whenever next year’s visitor arrangements return to the table, yet music and home comforts lift spirits again, and Schure’s book arrives as a welcome companion with thoughtful, eloquent observations.

Monday, June 14:

Started for home at 9; overcast early, then splendid day. Walk by myself in Berneck, which I like better than Alexandersbad. Unfortunately the worries about accommodating the visitors next year are so great that we are again drawn into discussions, which always make us despondent.

But between them the A major Symphony and its mysticism again; the introduction, in which one feels that certain parts must keep on going, though at times they cannot be heard, and then they combine with the other parts in the idealized dance of the Allegro.

Home at 7 o’clock; pleasure in the house. Early to bed. Found Schuré’s book awaiting me, fine phraseology and much perception and feeling.
