Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 21, 1875

Overview

Although the Day of Repentance kept most places shut, the writer and Prof. Doepler managed to get the museum opened and enjoyed the old treasures, especially a van Eyck head and a Velázquez portrait. The return home revealed R. overwhelmed by visitors and concert business for Vienna, followed by a round of calls, a dinner with courtly company, and a quieter evening among friends at the Royal Household office.

Wednesday, April 21:

Day of Repentance, everything closed, but in spite of that I succeed, with Prof. Doepler, in getting the museum opened; great delight in the old objects and those newly acquired, especially a head by van Eyck and a portrait by Velázquez.

Returning home, I find R. in great difficulties, lots of visitors, and on top of that the necessity of drawing up the programs for Vienna, where a third concert is being planned. Photographers ceaselessly pestering! Calls with R. (British ambassador, Usedoms, etc.).

At 5 o’clock with our niece Johanna; very nice dinner with the lady in waiting to the Crown Princess, Countess Brühl, Dohm, etc. After that, spent the evening with a few friends in the Office of the Royal Household.
