Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 27, 1875

Overview

Richard had a poor night and remained troubled by orchestral difficulties, especially the musicians’ rising demands. A curious inquiry from Hamburg about the Logier method prompted a cheerful reply, while the diarist looked out on spring birds and wished life were less harassing. In the evening they returned to Gfrorer, and Richard linked his conversion to Catholicism to his unhappy philosophical outlook.

Saturday, March 27:

Unfortunately not a good night for R. I have to prepare the linen in the morning; he still has orchestra troubles, they are raising their terms so high that the cost will be very much increased. A Herr v. Sydow writes from Hamburg inquiring about the Logier method, having read in the autobiography that R. learned composition through it; he says he has made investigations and cannot find it anywhere! R. replies to him in good spirits. Lovely weather, spring air, a lot of birds outside - if only life were not so harassing and I could devote myself entirely to the only one who matters!

In the evening read Gfrorer; R., whose mind is much occupied with the story of his conversion to Catholicism, puts it down to his horrible philosophical outlook - if Gfrorer had known Schopenhauer, he would probably not have taken such a step.
