Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 14, 1869

Overview

At breakfast Cosima and Richard revisit the torment of their earlier separation, with its longing for letters and misery after news arrived. Rheingold pictures come, the costumes look somewhat better, and Serov's visit brings entertaining conversation. The evening is filled with the happiness of their love, even as Rheingold's Munich performance is set for August 29.

Content

Saturday, August 14:

At breakfast we again mentioned the sufferings we went through before we came together. This longing for letters, this avidity for news, and misery after the letter has been read, the telegrams: God, who can ever have any idea of it, unless he has loved so dreadfully?

Arrival of the Rheingold pictures; the costumes have turned out somewhat better. In the afternoon Serov, entertaining conversation with him. In the evening overwhelming sense of the felicity of our love.

R. maintains he would be nothing without me. O God! Das Rheingold to be performed on the 29th.
