Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 5, 1875

Overview

The day was taken up with visits, including one to Countess Salm, and more unsettling news from home about family disorder. That evening at the Burgtheater with R., Henry IV proved disappointing except for a passable Falstaff and a rough but lively tavern scene, and later we briefly joined Marie Donhoff with Lenbach, Makart, and others.

Content

Friday, March 5:

Paid and received calls, among others Countess Salm; more news of domestic confusions.

In the evening at the Burgtheater with R., saw Henry IV, a tolerable Falstaff and the scene in the tavern well, if vulgarly, done, but all the rest atrocious. A few moments in the evening at Marie Donhoff’s with Lenbach, Makart, etc.
