Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 11, 1869

Overview

Cosima's hope for the Italian Tristan translation is met by Richard's remark that his pleasures now come from other things. Illness restricts her to maternal duties, while news that the King delegates the Goethe monument unveiling prompts speculation that political forces or their own situation have frightened him. Richard's final concern is only her recovery as he copies steadily.

Content

Wednesday, August 11:

This morning, when I told R. that I was looking forward to the Italian translation of Tristan and asked whether he was not, he said, "My pleasures now come from other things."

Unwell, I confine myself to my maternal duties. In the evening I read in the newspaper that the King is getting Count Pocci to unveil the Goethe monument he himself commissioned!!

Discussion with R. over whether the King was perhaps frightened off by what happened between us. Certainly something is now being hatched out against the King. R.'s last word: I care only about your recovery. R. works assiduously on his copying.
