Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 23, 1875

Overview

Another sleepless night left R. exhausted, though Skutsch went off to Leipzig for further legal advice and Sergeant Schlickau’s lessons showed real improvement. Herr Glatz appeared again, educated and pleasant, but the cost of his training was evident, and Elisabeth Nietzsche’s letter brought welcome relief by agreeing to stay with the children during my absence. That promise lifted a weight from me.

Content

Saturday, January 23:

R. again had a very bad night. Herr Skutsch is going to Leipzig to consult a lawyer there. Sergeant Schlickau continues his lessons, and significant progress is already to be seen!

In the evening Herr Glatz, a very well-educated, pleasant, and good-looking man. His voice is powerful, but the consequences of the training he has undergone are dire!

Letter from E[lisabeth] Nietzsche, who accedes to my request to come here and look after the children during my absence, a great relief.
