Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 16, 1875

Overview

The Schopenhauer portrait is finally to be hung, even as R. fumes over more dishonesty from Voltz and Batz in their wine dealings. Later, at Major Schäfer’s home, he meets Count Giech and reflects on the continuing importance the aristocracy might still have for art and life.

Saturday, January 16:

Schopenhauer is now to be hung; on a previous occasion R. told me that his friend Hermann Franck, now dead, once declared, “Either Germany will become something, or it will not; if it does, Schopenhauer’s philosophy will be taught in the universities.”

More trickery on the part of Messrs. Voltz and Batz: the former is charging R. 2 florins per bottle for some wine, 42 of which are being paid for by Feustel.

In the evening made the acquaintance of Count Giech at Major Schafer’s house. R. talks about the significance the aristocracy could still have for art and life in general.
