Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 9, 1869

Overview

Claire writes that she has contacted Hans, easing one anxiety as Richard improves slightly. Cosima reads Goethe, teaches the children with joy, and meets a poor botany student whose lack of means will force him into theology. His situation makes her wish she were rich enough to support individual talent rather than abstract liberal projects.

Content

Monday, August 9:

Letter from Claire; she has written to Hans! R. somewhat better. Children's morning. Afterward Wanderjahre.

In the afternoon the botanist, a poor student who would like to be a naturalist, but now for lack of means is to become a theologian! His father was forced to join the Sonderbund; he was a ribbon maker, and the powers that be said they would not support him if he did not go over to them.

Much joy in teaching the children. If I were rich, I should at once help this student to study natural history. Instead of founding [adjective unreadable] newspapers, these foolish Liberals should pay a little attention to individual needs; but they just go jogging along in their absurd way.
