Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 8, 1874

Overview

The family Sunday feels calmer and more inward: church, children at play, visitors, a walk, and then a musical evening that lifts everyone. Rubinstein’s playing of Beethoven fills her with reverence, and she responds to the sonata as something almost sacred.

Sunday, November 8:

The elder children in church, the younger playing around me, then received visitors while R. works. A walk in the afternoon with the children.

In the evening Herr Rubinstein gives us great pleasure by playing Beethoven’s Sonata, Op. 111. For the first movement he lacks the confidence and boldness of personality, but he plays the second very beautifully and delicately. The first needs “Liszt in his wildest period,” says R.

Unbelievably beautiful work, which reveals to one the sacred fount of benediction.
