Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 1, 1874

Overview

With the children at church and R. working on his score, she handles correspondence before spending a long afternoon in financial negotiations over the family’s legal arrangements. The question of the children’s future remains unresolved, though the evening brings a small respite in the form of the children’s cheerful little performance and some sober reflection on their characters.

Content

Sunday, November 1:

The children in church, R. on his score, I dealing with correspondence. In the afternoon from 4 o’clock on a great business debate with the two agents Voltz and Batz; friend Feustel asks me to remain in the room. It concerns the question whether to appoint them mandataries rather than assignees, which would one day severely restrict Fidi. The matter remains undecided, since they oppose it with all their might; they are coming again in the middle of next week.

In the evening the children act out a comedy for us, for which they dressed themselves up very prettily. Serious observations concerning the children’s characters.
