Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 15, 1874

Overview

R.'s bad night and the burden of letter-writing leave him strained, even as the household has reason for celebration over Richter's engagement and relief at progress with the painters. The evening closes with completion of Anabasis, though R. remains anxious about the pages still left in his score.

Content

Thursday, October 15:

R. did not have a good night and has to write letters in the morning, which always upsets him. Yesterday a telegram arrived from friend Richter, announcing his engagement; we congratulate him all the more joyfully since he is said to have chosen a good and pretty girl from a good family, with means of her own. R. sends my father the score of Die Walküre.

The painters Bruckner arrive and say how happy they are to be rid of Herr Hoffmann. They make no demands of any kind and are now going joyfully to work. In the evening we finished Anabasis. R. complains to me that he still has 30 pages of his score to write!
