Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 3, 1874

Overview

Wesendonck leaves, clearly touched by Richard’s contentment and by the friendship between them. Outside, the weather turns stormy and summer seems to be ending, while inside Richard is irritated by the sgraffito man’s presumption and the household’s usual irritations continue.

Content

Saturday, October 3:

Departure of Herr Wesendonck. R. says to him, “Since you have shown so much sympathy toward me, you must be pleased to see me now so content,” whereupon his good friend shows signs of emotion as he bids R. goodbye.

Stormy weather, summer now probably over. Our sgraffito man moves into our house; he annoys R. very much in the evening with remarks such as that Goethe’s color theory is nonsense, etc. Fidi at the kindergarten today.
