Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 2, 1874

Overview

Sedan was marked with cannon fire, flags, and a procession, but the festive atmosphere was cut short by concern for Fidi’s condition. After an attempted outing to the folk celebration, the family turned homeward and ended the evening with an engrossed reading of The Birth of Merlin.

Wednesday, September 2:

Sedan celebrated with cannon fire and flags, also with a big procession. Walked a little with the children, but Fidi still indisposed.

At lunch yesterday R. mentioned the great agitation in Austria because their cannons are worthless, a fine world, in which this warrants particular attention! I set out with the children to watch the so-called folk festival, but soon returned home. In the evening we read The Birth of Merlin with very great interest and amazement.
