Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 1, 1874

Overview

After the previous night’s exertions, the household keeps a quieter pace even though work continues in the background. The day moves between Wagnerian music, intimate conversation, and sharp remarks about Brahms, princes, and the political resentments circling around them.

Content

Saturday, August 1:

A little tired from yesterday evening; all the same, R. works, but we stay quietly at home.

In the afternoon, music from the divine Meistersinger, with memories of the time in which it was composed, and the ending of Götterdämmerung.

In the evening, alone with our friends; conversation about Herr Brahms and his damaging and bigoted influence on the educated middle classes.

R. relates some experiences from his life, the encounter with the King's erstwhile fiancée, Princess Sophie. Standhartner tells me how utterly the princes hate R.
