Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 25, 1874

Overview

An audition for a Rhinemaiden and the awkward accompaniment from Richter expose the gap between musical ambition and technical realization. Meanwhile, news of Hanseatic celebrations in Nürnberg stings because Wagner is excluded, and even the tribute to Hans Sachs seems to ignore the work that made him famous.

Content

Thursday, June 25:

A Rhinemaiden presents herself (Frau Pauli from Hanover), good voice, but no conception of enunciation. Richter attempts to accompany her, but cannot yet hold himself properly upright. Celebrations in Nürnberg for Hans Sachs, but nobody has the idea of inviting R. to them! Speeches, music, all sorts of things, but not a note of Die Meistersinger.
