Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 10, 1874

Overview

Little of consequence happens outside the usual work, but the evening music session collapses when Rubinstein’s showy playing irritates R. The mood stays frustrated as practical decisions about the theater site are discussed under the shadow of limited money.

Wednesday, June 10:

Nothing of importance, either inside or out; R. works. In the evening there was to be music, but it had to be abandoned, since R. is very vexed by the “capers” of J. Rubinstein, who starts off playing like a virtuoso; we take up something from Christus, but the session is soon broken off.

The theater grounds are discussed; two plans have been put forward, neither of which R. particularly likes, and he is also not happy that the restaurant is to be placed directly on the site. However, with the lack of money it is not of much moment what he likes or does not like.
