Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 28, 1874

Overview

R. is still weak from the Marienbad cure and sunk in discouragement, while the day is shaped by religious duty as Lulu is prepared for confirmation and deeply moved by Cosima’s earnest talk about sin, grace, and redemption. The evening turns to Hans’s sharp criticism of a Glinka opera, ending the day on a note of intellectual bite after the child’s spiritual solemnity.

Content

Thursday, May 28:

R. takes his Marienbad water, but feels little benefit from it and is in very low spirits. I have to prepare Lulu for her confirmation, and I address myself earnestly to her heart; my theme is the splendid and simple myth of the Fall, the misery that came from it for the world, a misery whose cure can be found only in salvation; our urges are more powerful than we ourselves, but more powerful than these urges is grace, which can change us. This miracle happens every day. The child was much moved. I give her a crucifix.

In the evening a very interesting article by Hans about the failure of a Glinka opera in Milan, implacable toward the Italians.
