Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 20, 1874

Overview

The main effort of the day was a birthday poem for R., worked on in the midst of constant disruptions from family and workmen before it was finally finished. Guests and children brought a festive air, though the pleasant gathering was shadowed by troubling news that her father had been unwell.

Content

Wednesday, May 20:

Attempt to write a poem for R.’s birthday, constant interruptions by R., the children, the paper hanger, but I get it drafted at last.

Expecting Richter, the children painting flags: he arrives half an hour before Frau v. M., at three. I am told my father has been very much indisposed recently.

In the evening a tolerable conversation between four somewhat different people.
