Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 10, 1874

Overview

The spring weather brings weakness rather than vigor, postponing a birthday celebration and leaving both of us in bed for much of the day. R. still works steadily, and the mood is punctuated by encouraging business news, though it is offset by my father’s letter saying he will not visit and will instead spend months in Rome.

Content

Friday, April 10:

Loldi’s birthday celebrations have to be postponed; we are all in the grip of spring. R. writes a page of his score; he tries something out on the piano and then returns to his desk: “A stitch in time saves nine,” he says, laughing.

Herr Peters-Friedlander writes of the continued success of the “Kaisermarsch” and offers 5,000 marks for an overture. And yesterday Herr Eckert wrote to say that this quarter had brought in 1,750 thalers in Berlin, houses continually sold.

Friday to Tuesday, April 10-14:

Spent more or less in bed. Nothing significant has happened, two fine spring days, but otherwise gray and stormy weather. R. also not well, and slow progress in the house. My father writes me that he will not be visiting us this summer; he is going to Rome for 6 to 8 months. R. is working regularly, if slowly.
