Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 5, 1873

Overview

R. dislikes the Thursday gathering because it leaves him with a headache, though he continues working despite persistent domestic vexations. In the evening the diarist takes over reading because of Christmas preparations, and R. refuses to read Luther’s life amid dolls’ hats. Instead they return to Freytag, finding the historical episode engaging even as his style feels mannered and overly Tacitean.

Friday, December 5:

R. was dissatisfied with the Thursday gathering, which left him with a headache, but he works nonetheless. He is still having much vexation with the house.

In the evening, since I am doing a lot of work for the Christkind, he takes over the reading. Not wanting to read Luther’s life amid dolls’ hats, he takes up Freytag’s book and reads us the account of the deputation to Attila, very interesting, though Freytag’s style is terrible, full of affectation and Tacitean mannerisms.
